The Snow is Following Me...

This is a video of how snow affects Portland, Oregon, where there are no snow plows and nobody owns shovels or snow blowers, so the smallest amounts of snow (by New England standards) simply brings the city to a screeching halt.

I've been out of work for the entire week and yesterday was the first day with over an inch of snow! Most days this week the roads were actually pretty much bare, but still nobody was out and the ones who were all had chains on their tires. It's a completely different mentality, and I find it quite amusing...

Bucerias

This is some footage from the town an hour up the coast from us that was slightly less tourist-focused, but still pretty crazy. One thing about Puerto Vallarta itself is that its ALL about the time shares. You can't walk 4 steps without being acausted by yet another guy trying to take you on a time share tour, but not saying so up front.

Well, we were actually invited into the restaurant in this video and were at first like "no, we're not interested" because we thought it was a time share. When he said he was just inviting us into his restaurant we decided to give it a shot. We were, after all, looking for a place to eat. But once we were settled in, he came up trying to get us to go on a time share tour! I guess the restaurants have some kind of symbiotic relationship with the time share guys. It does bring in business!

The irony to all this is that on our last day there, we had a few hours to kill between checking out of the resort and catching our plane home so we actually TRIED to go on a time share tour, figuring if we could make a couple hundred bucks in our down time then why not? As it turns out, after ALL that hounding, we're not even eligible to go on the tour because we're not over 30! You'd think they'd get that out of the way right up front... hah!

Swimming With Dolphins

After the horses we decided why not step it up a notch and try riding a dolphin? unfortunately, we weren't allowed to have video DURING the experience since they make a killing off selling photos by what they call their "mexican paparazi" (one of which is featured below, the one and only that we purchased). But you can still see some dolphins :-)

I did a lot of horse-related activities as a kid, first attending and then counseling at a horse day camp and working at the ranch in exchange for lessons. During my years of chemo and weakened immune systems, I was technically not allowed to go back to work with horses, and since I've been in Boston I've realized that I miss them! So, when presented with a chance to go on a multi-hour trail ride that included breakfast, lunch, and swimming in a waterfall for just under $50 each we decided why the heck not??

The Life on a Resort

Chad and I went on our first vacation together that didn't involve visiting friends or family... just taking time to relax. We got to use a week of his parents' time share, and decided to trade into a spot in Mexico. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the time shares in Mexico all tended to be pretty ritzy, and in the middle of tons of other crazy resorts. I'll post a series of videos but this one is just about the resort...

The Beginning

I've done a couple maternity shoots over the last week, which means some new newborn shoots are coming! I enjoyed doing the maternity shoots more than I expected, and I'm really happy with the way they came out. It's neat because yes it's about the belly but also it's about the very beginnings of a relationship, as well as the relationship between the existing family members. I chose a couple of my favorites but there were so many that I liked that the ones I chose are kind of at random. You'll have to go to my flickr page to see more.

Little Caterpillar

I'm on a roll with kids lately, which is awesome! Soon I should have enough photos to launch my photography portfolio website, which is a goal I've been working towards for a while now.

This little girl (who's parents call her their little caterpillar) is the youngest in my portfolio so far, so the session was full of new challenges and things to think about. It's amazing how different it is photographing infants outside the familiar studio environment. But I'm learning to use the new surroundings to my advantage. For example, this apartment had these amazing corner windows, so I decided to try a little back lighting. I think it worked well!

I got myself a new lens recently, and went over to try it out on my friend's little girl. It has no zoom which I'm not at all used to so it was interesting to get used to moving myself around so much but it's totally worth it for the 1.8 F-stop! Check out that depth of field! What fun! I love it!

Yay for Vacation!

Chad and I disappeared for almost 2 weeks back to my parents' home in the Northwest. Boy, was it a needed vacation after Xmas season at the studio had me working like mad and Chad's work was no less forgiving... my mom wanted pictures of my sister and I, so I gave Chad my camera and orchestrated a photo shoot from the other side of the lens. I love teamwork! We danced, dipped, hugged, jumped, laughed, smiled and even posed a time or two. I made a fun little compilation of a few of my favorite shots.. although it was very difficult to choose!

We even got in a somewhat unconventional and one-day-belated New Years kiss

My first baby!

Although I've been photographing babies for going on 6 years now professionally, this is the first I've done independently and therefore the first I've done without the confidence that comes from studio lighting, and the comfort of having all of the quilts, seamless backdrops, and posing tools I'm accustomed to.

It forced me to be more creative in some ways and there were definitely a lot of failed attempts in there, but in the end I came out with a lot of great shots that I never could have gotten in the studio because of the differences just mentioned, which was pretty exciting! I can't wait to do more!

Is "goddess" a bad word?

Philosophically speaking, who are we? Who am I? Who are you? Who and/or what affects who we are; as individuals, as communities, as cultures, societies, races....

Obviously there is a lot to say about this and a lot of energy to be generated through the discussion - both positive and negative. Some people would claim that we have full control over our destinies, while others would insist that we have none. And while this debate rages in one corner of our existence, still others struggle to extract definitions as to what they all mean, and what is "destiny".

Using the English language as a paramount reference point, we bind ourselves into devastating paths that lead to absolute miscommunication. We land solidly in our anger and disagreement and manage to completely miss the fact that when it comes down to it, whether our dogma allows us to admit or forces us to deny it, we all just want to believe that there is something important enough to live for.

I've heard a lot of people who say they do not believe in concepts such as "luck", "love", "fate"... The problem is language.

I do believe in all of these things, especially love and fate -- in my own way. To quote an earlier fridge "haiku", "who says language is never purple?". Must we all agree on a definition for such universally personal things in order for them to be true? Isn't there room to simply accept that sometimes things work out in ways we would not have expected and then realize that "truth" can mean something different to each of us linguistically but still, without exception, hold the same weight and merit?

I do think that every person who enters our lives enters in order to teach us something. I also think that the lessons they bring have little to do with them, and everything to do with us, and that it can be immediately apparent or take years or decades to understand them.

I don't think that all of this is necessarily true from the perspectives of those passers-by, but it's the perspective through which I choose to view them all, and this life. I do think that every situation, every accomplishment, every challenge, is something to learn from. I do think that every word I say, every move I make, every decision I support will effect everything around me in the same way that I am affected by the movement of others. I do believe that our lives are in continual motion and that the motion is inevitably shared, no matter how much we try to separate or individualize.

I do think we're all connected, and we need to be careful and loving in our actions in order for the world to return to a more naturally positive balance.

So I convinced Chad to walk around with me...

Delerium and how we make it through

I had gum surgery last Tuesday (the 9th) and it's been a ridiculous stretch since then...

Let's start off with a little history. I've learned that there are two things that lead to gum recession. One is not brushing/flossing enough so that plaque builds up and your gums are separated from your teeth. The other is brushing too hard so that your gums are slowly worn away.

So. Looking back over my history I had a couple years of low blood counts and immune dysfunction during which I was told not to brush my teeth, because it was dangerous to do things that cause abrasion through which infection could enter. After those years passed, my dentist told me that I was incredibly lucky and I had no cavities but that I had a bunch of areas where it looked like cavities were just beginning and so I should be extra careful to take good care of my teeth. What he failed to mention was what exactly to do, and not to do. So I interpreted that as "brushing well" which ignorantly translated in my mind to scrubbing harder....

Fast forward through 5 or 6 years of (what I would now classify as) negligent dentists who failed to point out the hole that I was literally scrubbing my way into and I ended up with one tooth that had a gum recession almost all the way to the bottom of the root. I thought I was doing good (I never did end up getting any cavities)...

Well, my immune system still isn't stellar so after having the initial surgery, and being on tylenol 3 supplemented with motrin and eccedrin for most of a week with gaps of pain that led me to malnourish myself to the point of baseline hopelessness, it was clear that I was having problems beyond what the periodontist had anticipated.

I finally went to my medical doctor to ask what I could do, since he understood my history, and he put me on $85 (yes thats after insurance) worth of crap which has put me back on the up-swing. Yay for simple Nystatin and Levaquin.. along with percocet for the meantime...

Today I'm feeling so much better but I'm not thinking TOO silly optimistically because Chad is right when he says that if I change my expectations too much I'm just setting myself up for disappointment in case I do have another setback.

Anyways, I figured it's time for another magnetic concoction, and since it's been a very nonsensical week I think it calls for a very nonsensical haiku, the choice of which is inspired by Chad's (highly appreciated) attempts to soothe me by playing guitar and reminding me how good it feels to take baths.

Language is never purple.

The manager at the studio I work at is Portuguese. Her accent is of endless intrigue to me, because she certainly accents words differently but she also arranges them differently in a way that is completely sensical much of the time but also very unique.

Sometimes I find myself arranging sentences as she would, for example "The 15 images on CD, it's 179.95" whereas normally I would say it with no pause and, actually, probably with the sentence re-organized with images on CD coming at the end: "it's 179.95 for 15 images on CD"...

Anyways, it's gotten me thinking once again about language and how much I like to play with it. So for a new bit of fridge poetry, this one not in haiku format because I liked it too much as it was.

Dancing and Photographing

I did a photo shoot the other day with Heather Bryce, a choreographer and dancer, at Spy Pond up in Arlington. The goal of the shoot was mainly to capture her in motion, as well as to get some head shots of her.

The park is beautiful, but very parky in that there are fences and benches and parked cars and people and dogs all over the place. Because of this it was a challenge to find spots that were empty for long enough expanses that we could shoot and have it look like she was alone.

We had a great time, though, and I think we did a good job of making it hard to tell that anyone else existed. She's so beautiful, and she made it easy to capture stunning images! Less Size Pant

Chad has been feeling sick. Usually he cooks everything but lately he hasn't been feeling like cooking. I think this poem might have come partially from that.

But mostly it came from our amusement at the words "less" "size" and "pant" all in a row. It makes us feel even more lucky to be living with each other, rather than having to worry about encountering any number of Chinese men, or smoke, or just plain strangers when venturing out of our bedroom...

Fridge Haiku

Chad and I are slowly settling into our new place. After 2 months of blank refrigerator, we finally broke out the magnetic poetry.

We stuck word after word onto the fridge until it looked like it had magnetic poetry pox. Then, satisfied, we went to make dinner... but those words all over the fridge were too tempting and before you knew it we were munching on frozen yogurt sitting in front of the fridge and seeing how many haiku we could make from the words that were there...

I've decided to post a few of them in an attempt to get myself back into blogging. They'll be photos rather than video, and since I've been doing a lot of still photography lately this suggests to me a possible transition from strictly video blogging to photo and video blogging. We'll see what happens...

Veggie Oil Filtration

VeggieOil Pickup

Still thinking about converting to SVO, and Chad just put a deposit down on a VW Rabbit that has been converted already. So I called up the Green Grease Monkey guys and asked if they'd let me tag along while they collect waste veggie oil and show me the ropes.

The restaraunt we will be collecting from for our car(s) will be considerably more straightforward than the footage you are about to see. Since it's a smaller restaraunt, they won't have the huge drums and all we will have to do is walk in and carry out already-filled cubes of oil!

Next lesson will have to be setting up a filtration system at home...

Going Diesel

I bought a car in August. It was a Honda Civic, a basic economy car known for its reliability and its gas mileage. Many of my friends live off the subway lines and many miles from me, my work at WGBH is hard to get to without a car, and every job I seem to be applying for requires that I have my own transportation. So I caved.

Despite my good intentions and rationalizations, it became clear that driving this Honda was gnawing at my soul. The automatic transmission confused me and it's all together possible that the unfamiliar territiry simply made me paranoid, but the mileage just never seemed to be what it should be. I felt like I wasn't even making it to 30 miles per gallon, and slowly I stopped visiting people because I felt guilty.

I would be on edge driving to have dinner in Waltham (only a 10 mile trip from my home) because I figure that's probably almost half a gallon of gasoline that I'm using, and by driving all the time and burning so much gasoline I'm contributing to so many problems including health risks associated with the gasoline exhaust, greenhouse effects, and warped political priorities that have arisen to ensure US appropriation of foreign oil.

So after owning the Honda for less than 6 months, I decided it was time to sell it and buy something that didn't stress out my morals so much. Enter, 1989 VW Jetta. For now, this car will run on diesel which is not much better for the environment, but at least is more efficient. I can get approximately 45-50 miles to the gallon, as opposed to just under 30 with the honda. And as it warms up I can transition to biodiesel and eventually, with the help of these guys, to SVO (straight vegetable oil).

Turns out it isn't difficult at all, just takes a delicate balance between starting out with very little water in the first place, and accidentally leaving it outside in the car all night long while it's snowing... The result is beautiful. Just don't tell my mom I've been freezing the new Nalgene she got me...

Koalas are not Snuggly.

We learned a lot about the cute, cuddly koala bear while in Australia. Namely, that they are not really any of these things. While they are fairly cute, the common conceptions stop there. They are not bears and, as we discovered, they are also not snuggly.

We were watching this guy,and then we noticed there was a mom with a baby on her back higher up in the tree.

My sister decided to take a video of the mom and baby duo, and as she was doing so the cute, cuddly, innocent guy pictured above tried to (or did) rape her with her baby still on her back. Apparently, this is the norm for koalas. In fact, the ranger said that koalas simply do not have consensual sex. Ever. Nice eh?

Takahe Attacks my Dad

The Takahe is one of the most endangered birds in the world. It was actually thought to be extinct for a good stretch of time, before being rediscovered and relocated to a protected island. Well, since my vacation in New Zealand was accompanied by my ornithologist father, we had to go to that island and check it out, along with all the other protected birds there. We were lucky enough to see it munching during lunch time by the picnic tables, and as if that isn't enough, it tried to eat my dad's pants. It makes you think, is it really any wonder this bird isn't doing so well? It's not like it can get by on its charm and good looks, either...

Halloween Is Christmas

Congratulations! After a number of inquiries, you are about to be rewarded with a heartfelt and somewhat risky video blog. The text below is included in the video, but there is non-synchronis audio so I figured I'd let you come back and read it in a static form if you so desire...

I couldn't get the file to compress very much without totally losing readability, so I apologize for the large file size. but this post is mostly for me anyways, so i guess it doesnt really matter..

Yes, I know. I've not posted in months and not provided an explanation. For this, I can't decide whether to be sorry or proud.

I will confess, it has been hard to break up with someone with whom I publically created art. The breakup causes the art to change, inevitably, but how? I had no template for what to do next and so I did the only thing I could think of, and tried to keep going. But, in doing so, I snuffed out the spirit of the vlog we had together. Because it isn't mine to take. I mean it is... but it isn't. It was ours, and now it is nobody's. So why am I posting?

Since the breakup it has been very difficult for me to retain my sense of individuality in this world that is so immediately connected on level after level. I've felt like in order to move on I need to re-establish a life that is my own, that I selfishly keep away from Mike lest he influence or judge it. The problem is that if I don't erase him from my life, I will never be satisfied with what I have because i want him to be there with me. What a dilemma.. how can I erase him from my life when I know that he's watching it on a video blog?

Because of this predicament, I've refrained from posting anything. Because I know he will see it, and I'm not ready for that. I'm speaking from this moment in time, not predicting that this will go on forever or even claiming that it's been the conscious motivation behind my silence up until this point.

Anyways, I was in a mood today to clean out my life. It started with some clutter in my kitchen and went and went until I was watching all the old footage that had never been cut and sitting silently at my desk astounded at the precious moments that were hiding there, and horrified that i would now have to make a decision either to allow their existence or to delete them... I could probably argue that deleting them would be helpful in moving on, but it's hard to delete something like that, knowing that the person is no longer there to live a new moment with. So I've decided on a new form of healing. Posting it.

I have no idea why I never posted this particular clip, because it's pure magic. This is the Mike that I could never keep up with but loved more deeply than I could explain. The Mike who left me because he, unimaginably, thought he couldn't give me what I deserved. So, for the first clip that I post conciously knowing that he is probably watching... Mike, I (maybe stupidly) would just like you to know how much I miss you.

Merlin on Drugs

Merlin had to have surgery on his foot, apparently sometimes when cats are declawed and it isn't done quite right, the claw can try to regenerate over time, but by that time it has nowhere to go so it just sits inside the foot being really irritating and eventually tries to grow out some random place. which is what happened to merlin. This amazes me, because he was declawed when I got him and I've had him for 5 years! So they had to go in and remove the offending parts and amputate a part of one of his toes, because the internal infection had gotten so bad. poor guy!! so he's ok now but he is NOT happy. in fact, this is almost certainly the most offended merlin has ever been. usually he's just scared, but this time he's pissed off. there's no question about it. maybe a little humiliated, too, if i can anthropomorphize so much...

My parents are the best, and it was great for them to take care of me that weekend while I did the first major thing on my own, without Mike, since moving to boston. Here is the second project I've done for my film class. This one involved actually editing the film, which was a fun yet trying experience. I think it went pretty well. I realized sometime between now and the last film I posted that the film to video transfer equipment at school really does a bad job, and so I color-corrected this one and desaturated it to true black and white. I hope it looke nicer than the last one and it isn't just me getting carried away with color correction :-)

Oh yeah. and it really needs a sound track. If you know of one, please share it with me.

A small amount of confusion has ensued from this post. I guess I didn't realize that it might be confusing. So I am adding this text in order to clarify things a bit.

In case you are in the position of not knowing about my medical history, here is a brief overview. I was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1997, and ended up fixing that problem with a bone marrow transplant in 2000. I have been cancer-free since then, and have been celebrating the anniversary of that date ever since. So that's what this is all about. I'm sorry for any confusion, and thanks for all your support!

I'm taking a film class this semester. yeah - film, not video. I've never worked with film before and its a little wild. I thought I'd show you my first creation. It's based on a funny little children's book called "Watch me", in which the character (a young child) begs her parents to watch as she slides, jumps, rides a bike, etc. At the end there is a bike crash. I have changed the story a bit in places. Well - ok it really isn't the same story, but it was fun anyways.

So their staying with us 'til they're two pounds. Its funny, I remember my grandmother battling squirrels when I was a little kid and wondering what her problem was - why did she hate them so much? they're so cute! my recent experiences have changed my opinion on that. this bastard ate a good inch of plastic out of my bird feeder, and about a third of the seed within two days of discovering it! most of the video is just the stupid squirrel making a racket continually. this is what we hear pretty much all day when the feeder is out. i mean really - what do you do in this situation?

Hey everyone...

Mike and I have been moving (yes, again) and then off to a folk-dancing camp for Labor Day weekend. because of this, we've not been around for a couple of weeks now, but that will change soon! We didnt take any vlog footage of any of the fun (why? im not entirely sure.. probably because I was too busy participating) so you'll just have to take my word for it, or visit the photos site I managed to make. I hope that everyone is still around and doing well, its going to take a while to catch up on the vloglist if it happens at all...

While i was in media no-mans-land, Hurricane Katrina struck and because I had no TV or internet I was kind of out of the loop. Well, i've had a vague picture of the devestation but just havent seen much coverage myself. Zadi made a beautiful and moving recap of footage from the hurricane katrina nightmare, and since it was one of the first things i saw upon my re-entrance to the vlogosphere i am re-vlogging it before watching or creating anything else. Planned Parenthood Demonstration

I haven't posted any personal videos yet, and decided today that it's about time I start. I've had a couple sitting on back burners that I was too nervous to post, largely just because I'm a shy person (including one where I explain that fact), but this one is going up, because I'm feeling brave today.

This movie is of me doing one of my chores that I don't share in common with too many people my age; refilling pill boxes. I take 11 pills per day, every day, and I will tell you a little about why in this video. It's kind of long, but I hope you'll take the time to watch and get to know me a little better. I've been feeling lately like I know a lot of other vloggers to an extent that it's impossible to know me through my videos, and I'm excited to become part of the "vlogosphere" on a slightly deeper level.

After the lightning took off the top of our telephone pole, the authorities showed up and we taped them because we can do anything we want, because we're videobloggers. Right? Mike sets us straight about how lightning chooses where to strike, and we make fun of the fake lightning effects caused by the real lightning behind him.

We had a ridiculous electrical storm last night, and since you all liked the rain so well we knew you would like this. As soon as the camera came out, lightning struck a telephone pole about 20 feet from our porch!

I was trying to juggle and doing terribly, so Mike decided to set me straight. I hope this benefits more than just me, and you can all learn to juggle if you don't know how already. Then you can be as cool as Mike :-P
